Student Hurricane Network National Advisory Board

The Student Hurricane Network (SHN) is seeking a diverse group of highly committed law students interested in social justice and community lawyering in the Gulf Coast region to join the SHN National Advisory Board. The SHN National Advisory Board oversees and guides the work of SHN. The term for new board members will begin in February 2008 and run through February 2009, with an option to extend. The SHN National Advisory Board will meet by phone once per week and commit at least 30 hours per month to SHN. The Advisory Board will also meet in person twice per year, in the late spring and late summer.

In exchange for the time and energy that the SHN National Advisory Board members provide, SHN will organize skills training workshops for the Advisory Board members which may include grantwriting, op-ed writing, public speaking and more. Advisory Board members will also be mentored by current SHN leaders, SHN partner attorneys and SHN alums, and may receive invitations and funding to attend special events, including awards dinners and national conferences. We also plan to organize a weekend-long retreat for Advisory Board Members and mentors in mid- to late-March 2008.

Eligibility: All 1L and 2L law students are eligible to apply, whether you have been involved with SHN before or this would be your first time (Note: 3Ls are encouraged to participate in SHN in other ways, including assisting with SHN National Advisory Board mentorship). We encourage diversity in applicants, including law students from diverse geographic regions, ethnicities, ages and political backgrounds.

Selection: A selection committee made up of the current National Advisory Board and active SHN members will select 3-5 applicants to serve as Advisory Board members. We will give particular weight to applications that demonstrate a background and interest in relevant issues, as well as a strong interest in getting more involved with SHN, particular in a leadership capacity.

Application Process: Please submit your resume and completed application to studenthurricanenetwork@gmail.com by Monday February 4, 2008, at 12 midnight. Applications can be found in the Library section of our website. Everyone who submits an application will get an interview by phone. We will begin making selections by February 20, 2008.

Questions?: If you have additional questions, please email us at studenthurricanenetwork@gmail.com. We will also discuss National Advisory Board membership on the January 28, 2008, Membership Call (9p ET / 8p CT, call-in (712) 432-2777, code 714720).
